Hokkaido University Library will hold a panel exhibition commemorating its 150th anniversary, "Exhibition of Old Northern Maps (First Period): Changes in Maps of Hokkaido," from August 23rd to September 29th.

The library's collection of northern materials includes a wide range of materials related to Japan's northern regions, particularly Hokkaido, from Japanese and Chinese books from the Edo period to modern publications, including photographs and maps from the Hokkaido Development Commission. In particular, maps and drawings of Hokkaido (Ezo), Karafuto, and the Kuril Islands have been systematically collected, making them one of the most interesting collections. This special exhibition will select particularly distinctive maps of Hokkaido created from the early Edo period to the early Meiji period, and provide an overview of Hokkaido's history while tracing the evolution of maps. We hope that the old maps will inspire your thoughts about Hokkaido's history.
