Hokkaido University Museum will hold the 5th Saturday Citizen Seminar of 2024, "Understanding the Anthropocene through Geological Strata," on August 10th.

The fifth seminar will be presented by Professor Masanobu Yamamoto Faculty of Environmental Earth Science. The impact of human activities on the global environment is growing stronger every year. What will happen to the Earth in the future? A new era called the Anthropocene has been proposed, based on the idea that the current Earth, where industrialization is progressing, is in a different era from the pre-industrial era. Although it has not been approved by the international organization that determines the geological era, the term and concept of the Anthropocene are gaining in popularity. In this seminar, we will talk about what the Anthropocene is, how it is defined, and how the impact of humans on the environment has changed over time, based on the decipherment of the geological strata that are the source of this information.
