UArctic (the University of the Arctic), a network of educational and research institutions to which Hokkaido University is a member, is calling for students for the "Circumpolar Studies Online Course" to be offered from September 2024 to April 2025.

 

The Circumpolar Studies Online Course is an undergraduate online course on the Arctic offered by UArctic member universities through an online education system. There is no cost. The course is taught in English.

 

Fall Semester: September – December, 2024
  • Courses:
    1.     CS 100: Introduction to the Circumpolar World
    2.     CS 311: Land and Environment of the Circumpolar World I
    3.     CS 321: Peoples and Cultures of the Circumpolar World I
    4.     CS 331: Contemporary Issues of the Circumpolar World I
    5.     GEOG-CAST 2810: Canada’s People and Places
    6.     CAST 3243: The Contemporary Canadian North in a Circumpolar Context

* CS 100 is the prerequisite for CS 311, 321 and 331. Credits cannot be transferred.

  • Target: All students (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Course fee: Free
  • Language: English (ability to understand lectures and discussion)
Winter Semester: January – April, 2025
  • Courses:
    1.     CS 100: Introduction to the Circumpolar World
    2.     CS 312: Land and Environment of the Circumpolar World II
    3.     CS 322: Peoples and Cultures of the Circumpolar World II
    4.     CS 332: Contemporary Issues of the Circumpolar World II
    5.     CAST 3241H: Histories of the Canadian North

* CS 100 is the prerequisite for CS 322 and 332, and CS 100 and CS 311 are the prerequisites for CS 312. Credits cannot be transferred.

How to apply

Send the following documents to the International Relations Division (e-mail: global@oia.hokudai.ac.jp) by 17:00, July 25, 2023.

  1. Online Course Registration Form(Word)
    Complete the form in English.
    Send a PDF file of the form with your signature in the “STUDENT SIGNATURE (Required)” field and the date in the “Date” field.
  2. Proof of English proficiency (TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.), for the applicants whose first language is not English.
  3. When submitting the above documents, please let us know your name (in kanji), affiliation, year, and student number.
