Hokkaido University Museum will hold the 4th Saturday Citizen Seminar of 2024, "Seeing the Slavic World through Writing," on July 13th.
The fourth session will be entitled "The Slavic World as Seen through Letters," and will feature Professor Motoki Nomachi Slavic-Eurasian Research Center.
Characters play an important role in transcribing words, but their role is not limited to that. Characters can also be symbols that provide emotional support and pride to the people who use them, and it is not uncommon for them to represent political ideas or the traditions of the cultural sphere to which the language has historically belonged. Even the shape of a font can have various connotations. In this lecture, I will take a look at the types of characters, the history of their origin, the changes in the use of characters, and the background and current situation of the languages of Slavic Eurasia (the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe), especially Slavic languages, and hope to provide an opportunity to deepen knowledge of the diversity of Slavic languages and the Slavic Eurasian world through characters.
